Evaluation/Reflection

This term in creative media, I completed a website and poster for the film ‘Disturbia’ I chose to do the assignment on this movie because I thought it would offer a variety of angles, mystery, murder, friendship, family and love. I also think it is a good film and have enjoyed watching it many times. My goal for this assignment was to keep up the standard of work I have shown throughout the year. I have gone well in all assignments so far in all sections, and I really want this trend to continue this term.

At the beginning of the term I was really looking forward to this assignment because I thought it would be a lot of fun. Even though I though it would be really fun, I also knew that it would be a lot of work and as it is a short term, I was worried that the time limit would be very restricting.

Through out this assignment, I think I have gone really well in this assignment. I am really happy with my website and I think it reflects how hard I worked. I worked on the assignment in every lesson as well as for homework. I think I have managed my time really well and was not at all rushed at the last minute. In first term, I left myself with a lot of work to do on the last night because I underestimated how much work I had left. This did not happen this time and I am confident that my work is of a high standard.

From continuous blogging and completing various research components, I feel comfortable that my website and poster fit into the design brief/task sheet well and I think I have done a good job on successfully completing the project.

I am really looking forwards to creative media next year, in 2010. I think I have gone really well and improved through out the year, and I believe the task next year is to make a film. AS it will be a year long project, I think I will be able to really get into it and produce a piece which is well structured and thoroughly planned.

Website Template

For my website, I decided to use a dark background. I chose to do this because it is a dark film and having a dark background would suit it the best. Having a light coloured background would not suit the film and the mood I am trying to create. My poster has pictures of police officers, murders and contains other scary pictures from the film. These are best represented when they have a dark background.

My Poster

This is the poster which I desingned and created using photoshop. It looks pretty bad here, but if you click on the image a better version can be viewed.

Poster Research

So far, I have only seen the one disturbia poster.

Images Used

All images in this project, both those on the poster and in the website were soucred from google images.

2.11.09 Lesson Ten

This lesson I once again worked on my website. I am now getting to the point where it is alsmost finished and almost finished my gallery during the lesson. Just my luck though, the lesson that I decided to gather photos from the internet to put in my gallery was the lesson that the internet was not working. I have tried to incorp[orate photos of all the different main characters, not just Kale who is the main character. The final assignment is due next week on Tuesday, which is quite a relief because I thought it was due this week at some point. This means I will have more time to improve my work and make sure I have included everything. I am aiming to complete my poster this week an then over the weekend and on Monday and Tuesday I will be able to finalize everything and put it together.

28.10.09 Lesson Nine

This lesson I worked on the presentation and reorganization of the website. An example of a change that I made was that the movie synopsis was originally on the homepage, but I changed that and the film synopsis now has its own page. The internet wasn't working very wel this lesson which was frustrating because I was using the internet a lot. At one point I was actually publishing a blog post and the entire internet shut down which caused me to lose all of my work. I also spent this lesson collectin images to put in my gallery.

26.10.09 Lesson Eight

For the first half of this lesson the internet was not working as someone had tripped over the internet cord in another classroom and this had caused the reeves internet to not work. This halted my progress because I was continuing with my actor profiles and I needed information and pictures about Carrie Anne Moss who plays Kale's mother in the movie. During the second half of the lesson the internet was restored and I was able to continue with my work.

23.10.09 Lesson Seven

This lesson I almost finished the actor profile on David Morse. Completeing these profiles has actually made me realise that these actors are actually in many movies that I have watched or am plainning to see. I think that I am going well and making good progress with my blog but I think I need to get a move on with my website and poster so that I don't end up behind.

Task

Creative Media
Year 9 Semester Two – Task 4, 2009

Task: The Creative Commercial Interface – Websites and Promotions

Student Name: Form Class: 9 Teacher: Mr Powell Mr Andrews

Due Date: FOLIO and JOURNAL: Week 8 JOURNAL REVIEW: Week 4 for reports

SKILLS
• Follow a Design Process
• Participate in OHS processes
• Apply critical thinking techniques
• Develop and apply creative arts industry knowledge
• Use multimedia with an emphasis on Animationish or iStopMotion

TASK
This term you will be using digital tools to promote a film via an online environment.

DESIGN BRIEF
Steve Blogs, the head of the Pixus Group, has been very impressed by the two films and the Photoshopped avatar you have created for his studio this year. Steve now wants your ideas on how to promote the films produced by the Pixus Group. He wants you to develop an online strategy to promote a film. So he can see the potential of your ideas, he would like you to create a promotion for a film. Your project must contain a website and a poster. Your website design should reflect the visual language and style of film you are promoting and include relevant graphics, a film synopsis, character information, a gallery, dates and a trailer.

PART A: In your journals or blogs, complete the research component

• Choose three films and explore the promotional material (posters, website, trailers etc) used to market each film.
• Identify the important elements that are common in all three sets of material.
• Make a list of the promotional material available for each film.
o i.e. does it include Posters, Trailers/Clips, Still images, Biographies, Character details etc

• Identify the elements of design - colour scheme, tone, shapes, space, etc.
• Identify the principles of design - composition, balance, emphasis, repetition, etc.
• Comment on the overall ‘feel’ developed for each film’s promotional materials.
o eg is it clean, crisp and bright or dark, moody and grungy?
o how does the overall ‘feel’ reflect the type of film being promoted?

• Are there a variety of promotional posters for the film?
• How is the website laid out. Look at the menu system, font selection and how information or promotional materials are accessed.
• Identify who the target audience is.
• In your opinion, are the websites effective in appealing to the intended target audience?
• What do you like/dislike about the promotional materials reviewed?

PART B: Show Development of iWeb Skills

You will complete a series of exercises in class using iWeb. This will help you develop the skills needed to produce your website.

In your journal or blog, you need to demonstrate that you have used the following features either as part of class exercises and / or in your final website.

Check these off as you go – you don’t have to use every feature, record those you do:
□ create a website
□ choose a template
□ add pages to the website
□ adjust font styles and colours
□ create hyperlinks links to pages, files and other websites
□ organise a menu system
□ insert text
□ insert shapes
□ insert graphics
□ insert multimedia files (movie files, sound files etc)
□ insert widgets
□ insert HTLM code
□ publish website to a folder

Use the above list as an iWeb tool sheet to help you record your skill development

PART C: Creation of your Website

In order to satisfy the design brief, you must;

• Complete a website with at least 3 linked pages containing as a minimum
o Homepage
o Photo Gallery
o Link to Promotional Poster
o Film synopsis and characters
o Date of release
o Actor, director and producer credits
o Link to a movie trailer

• Design and produce a website with a ‘look and feel’ that reflects the style of film you are promoting.

• Publish your website to a folder. Compress this folder, and submit via Blackboard.

Research / Journal, Blog Hints:
o Organise your research under headings
o If in doubt about whether or not to include it, include it in your journal
o Use the tool sheets to help you stay organised
o Include rough sketches, collages and notes to brainstorm your ideas
o Make sure you reference all your sources according to the Student Diary
o Keep at least two copies of your website for backup safety
o Don’t be isolated in class, look at what others are doing – this doesn’t mean you copy them, rather you seek inspiration from those around you
o Finally, don’t ever forget – creating is sometimes hard work, but it is always enjoyable!

Actor profiles

I have decided to include both actor and character profiles on my website. I have started researching the actors and the characters that they portray.

Carrie Anne Moss

21.10.09 Lesson Six

This lesson I continued to work and fix up my actor profiles. Originally, I was going to try and complete lots of actor profiles but I have now realized that I might not have time to do this. I have decided to just complete profiles for the main four actors and I will go back and add more afterward if time allos. This is because I don't want to run out of time and we don't have long to complete this assignment.

15.10.09 Lesson Five

This was a short and interrupted lesson. I just worked on completing my website. I actually couldn't find my website because I have two USBs at the moment and it took me a while to find the USB witht eh right file on it. I also have multiple copies it which are at different stages so I kept opening up the wrong ones. I fixed that up in the lesson however and that problem will not happen again.

14.10.09 Lesson Four

This lesson was spent designing the website. I have now written the synopsis on my web page and am going to continue to work on that. This was just a typical class lesson and I showed my practise poster to Mr Powell who said it was good and gave me some pointers on how to impove it and I will fix them up tonight or at any other chance I get.

Website Investigation

The investigations that I completed on the different film websites have helped me determine what website themes are common to certain genres as well as to draw inspiration from existing websites when creating my own. I completed this investigation of movie websites on the films 'Cheaper by the Dozen' , 'The Uninvited' and 'The Revolutionary Road'. These three films are very different genres and certain similarities and differences are visible when looking at their websites.

Cheaper By The Dozen is a good example of a movie for children. It is a light comedic film about family and the website is very similar to this. There is a large image of a goofy looking Steve Martin with a wallet, with wallet photos cascading to the floor. Next to the different characters, there is the name of the actor who played that character. The title of the film is in large bold type in the right/middle of the screen. There is a link which will make a trailer pop up and there is lots of white space. The website is white with lots of colours and without seeing the film or trailer, one gets the impression that it is a comedy about family which is exactly what it is.

The Uninvited is a scary, horror film about a girl who believes that her dads new girlfriend is a murder. The website for this film is the complete opposite to that of Cheaper By The Dozen. Instead of white space, there is black space. There is a central image of the lead actress, Emily Browning, looking a little scared and not knowing what is going to happen. All writing shown is in a mysterious kind of font, almost dripping, creating the illusion that it is blood. In teh right hand corner there is a trailer, but it is obvious just from looking at the site that it is a horro film even before the trailer begins. Only black and white are used so there is no colour. Even the image of the main actress is dark and spooky. There are links to more information such as bios of the characters, the gallery and how to purchase the film. As it is a flash website, each new page requires loading and after loading is always an extremely short scary segment of the film.

The website for the movie Revolutionary Road is different again. It is a serious drama/romance about a young couple who reach a crossroads in their life and decide to break out of their normal life and do something different. Their relationship is tested and the movie is serious with a little romance. The website for the film shows this and the colour scheme for the film is white and brown. Just from seeing the websites home page, it is obvious that it is not a horror movie or a fun family film. There is a large image of the two leading actors, Leonardo De Capri and Kate Winslet sitting together, both smiling. They look happy and once again, the trailer is shown on the right side. On the bottom of the page are links about how to purchase the film, visit the gallery etc. There are images on the website from the film, but having actually watched the movie, I feel that the vibe of the film is very different to that of the website for it. The film is much more serious an dark than the website makes it appears.

All three of these websites are very different from one another. The 'Cheaper by the Dozen' website is full of colour, 'The Uninvited' is scary and dark, with black being the dominant colour. The website for 'Revolutionary Road' is different again, having a romantic, serious vibe. Even though the three websites are so different, the layout of the websites was all very similar. All contained a trailer for the movie, lots of images, and links to the same other areas of the website such as a gallery, film information and character bios.

Poster First Attempt Experimentation

12.10.09 Lesson Three

During this lesson, I decided on my final film. I have decided to create my website, poster and film about the movie 'Disturbia'. I have decided to do it on this film as I think that it will give me a good contrast to work with. It is scary, but the issues of romance, friendship and family are also discussed. As there are many topics discussed, it will give a good variety.

During this lesson, I continued with my research. I began to collect images to use on my website and poster, but near the end of the lesson my computer stuffed up and the images were lost. During the lesson, Mr Powell showed us how to use iWeb. This is the program that we will use to complete the website task. To get the program, you have to download the ZIP file from blackboard onto the desktop. You then have to double click on the file to turn it into the iWeb program. That was then saved onto both USB and the desktop. I have got two USB's now to save all work on both f these sites and keep them in different locations so it will be twice as hard to lose my work.

9.10.09 Lesson Two

. This lesson, i did the investigation task about the three different movie websites. The first films that I decided to look at were Cheaper By The Dozen, The Uninvited and  Revolutionary Road. During the lesson, I just investigated the different websites, evaluating them and trying to work out the similarities and differences between the three films and the three websites as a result.

7.10.09 Lesson One

This was the first creative media lesson of the term. Over the holiday's, I created a list of ideas for my mash up. It turns out that we are not just doing mash ups any more, we are creating a poster, a website and a film in the style of a trailer. I can still use some of these ideas but I will have to change them a little and adapt them to fit the new criteria.

This lesson, I just investigated different films. I looked at lots of different film websites and just explored the layout of the different sites.
